Between March 2019 and September 2020 we worked on a project to find out what services were available in Liverpool for people experiencing homelessness, and what people using these services thought about them.
We spoke to people who were homeless about hostels and housing, support, health services, addiction services and social care. We also spoke to staff working in these services, to find out what they thought worked well, and where improvements could be made. We published a report about this, “Homeless services in Liverpool”.
This video was produced as part of the project. We interviewed Nigel, who was homeless himself, but now works in a hostel in Liverpool, supporting people who are homeless. As he says himself, “everyone’s experience is different”, but we believe it is important to hear from people who have lived experience of being homeless. Nigel's story and others like it serve as an important reminder that homelessness is about people, not statistics.
